On the subject of the top grounds in English football, the Etihad Stadium is a relative newcomer onto the scene.

Opened more than 20 years ago, it was originally conceived as a venue for athletics events before being converted into a football stadium and becoming the home of Manchester City.

However, it took a few years for the venue to gain prominence, a development that of course coincided with City’s rise to become a Premier League power. Beginning with its FA Cup title in 2011, followed a year later with a league championship (won in dramatic fashion on the season’s final day), the Etihad Stadium gradually became one of the top grounds to visit in the UK.

City is now considered one of the top clubs in all of Europe, thanks to the recently concluded Pep Guardiola era that saw numerous titles won across competitions, including a celebrated continental treble (Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League titles) in 2023.

All of that success is being called into question after an independent commission ruled Manchester City guilty of numerous financial fair-play violations in 2026. With the club appealing the rulings, the true fallout of the scandal — which could include retroactive points deductions, relegation and stripped titles — will likely not be known for some time.

However, it shouldn’t knock the Etihad Stadium off the list of grounds worth visiting for any “groundhopper,” let alone anyone who wants an enlightening glimpse of what English football is really like.

Getting to Etihad Stadium

The Etihad Stadium is located less than two miles east of the Manchester City Center — placing it on the opposite side of town from Old Trafford, home of City’s intracity archrival Manchester United.

The stadium is the centerpiece of the Etihad Campus, a collection of athletic facilities that includes Manchester City’s training headquarters.

It’s possible to walk from the Manchester Piccadilly train station to the Etihad Stadium, a journey that would take about half an hour. However, most fans use the city’s Metrolink tram system, which provides easy access to the area.

Take the Blue line eastbound toward Ashton-under-Lyne to reach the Etihad Campus, which has its own dedicated station. Note that some trains along this route will terminate at the Etihad Campus, and thus will have it marked as their destination.

Passengers can use tap to pay to board Metrolink trains — use the pay devices located on the platforms of each station to tap at the beginning of each ride, and remember to tap again at the end of your journey. Your final fare will be tabulated based on the number of rides you take during the day and the distances you travel.

After matches at the Etihad Stadium, pay devices will be available to scan as you progress through the queues toward the station.

Parking at Etihad Stadium

For drivers, several car parks are available for matches at the Etihad Stadium. A map of parking areas can be found on the Manchester City website.

Parking inventory for men’s matches opens 10 days prior, and is released first to season-ticket members, with the general public allowed to purchase 24 hours later. As of the 2026-27 season, parking rates were £12 for cars with two or more passengers, and £14 for solo drivers.

Note that you will have to have a Cityzens membership (also required to buy match tickets from the club) if you wish to purchase parking permits.

Things to do around Etihad Stadium

Beyond the athletic facilities of the Etihad Campus, the stadium is largely surrounded by residential neighborhoods, so for many years it had been difficult to find nearby restaurants and pubs to spend time in before the match.

But that changed in the fall of 2026 with the opening of Medlock Square, an entertainment district located directly north of the Etihad Stadium. It was built in conjunction with the expansion of the stadium that was completed in time for the 2026-27 season.

The complex includes several restaurants, all open on matchdays, as well as the Radisson Blu Medlock hotel, convenient for fans whose visits to Manchester are centered around a City match.

If you don’t care about spending time in an indoor space, the outdoor (covered) plaza that serves as Medlock Square’s centerpiece is quite conducive toward pre-match socializing. Large screens displaying match preview shows hang above two large bar spaces.

Manchester City’s team store, previously located in a standalone building just west of the stadium, was also moved into a larger space within Medlock Square.

Along the west side of the Etihad Stadium, near what can be considered the venue’s main entrance, pre-match festivities will include an emcee entertaining fans leading up to the arrival of City’s players and staff on the team bus about 90 minutes before kickoff.

Don’t miss the various statues of City legends, from the trio of Colin Bell, Francis Lee and Mike Summerbee near the west entrance to more recent stars Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

If those options don’t appeal to you, then you’re best hanging out in the Manchester city center before heading over. Most of the city’s restaurants, nightlife and hotels are in this district, of course, and fairly accessible before a match at the Etihad Stadium.

Look for options near the Piccadilly train station so that you’re relatively close to the stadium — from Piccadilly, the Etihad Campus is only three stops away on the Metrolink.

A circular ramp at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, is adorned with Manchester City banners

Watching a match at Etihad Stadium

Fans can enter the Etihad Stadium through one of numerous entrance gates. Be sure to check your ticket, which will have an assigned gate based on your seat location. Entering through that specific gate is important, as you might not be able to access the correct level if you don’t. (Presumably you’ll be told by ushers to proceed to your correct gate if you try to enter through a different one.)

Patrons with tickets for the upper tiers will enter through gates that lead directly to one of a number of circular ramps that lead upward.

The stadium is divided into four stands, with the Colin Bell Stand on the west side being where many of the fans holding VIP or hospitality tickets are seated. The south stand, named for longtime manager Pep Guardiola in the spring of 2026, is where City’s staunchest supporters typically sit, and where you’ll see banners and flags fly before and during matches.

The section allocated to visiting fans is also in the Pep Guardiola Stand, in the sections in the southeast corner of the stadium.

The Etihad Stadium originally opened as City of Manchester Stadium in 2002, and was designed as an athletics venue — meaning it had a running track. To prepare it for City’s relocation from its previous ground, Maine Road, the following year, the track was removed and the event floor lowered, allowing for the construction of the lower tier seen today.

As part of the recent renovation that included the construction of Medlock Square, the North Stand was expanded, raising the Etihad Stadium’s overall capacity above 60,000.

Be sure to get to your seats before kickoff for Man City matches so that you can catch the walk-out anthem, “Blue Moon,” a jazz standard from the 1930s that over the years became adopted as City’s own. It’s usually played just before the match begins.

Considering Manchester’s famous music scene, you’ll hear plenty of well-known songs by Manchester artists like New Order, Stone Roses and more over the loudspeakers. A special reverence is saved for Oasis, whose leaders Liam and Noel Gallagher are perhaps City’s most famous supporters.

Food and drink at Etihad Stadium

Outside the Etihad Stadium, there’s a pretty wide collection of food kiosks and carts around the perimeter of the stadium, similar to what most large football stadiums around England and throughout Europe in general offer.

Typical British stadium standards can be found on offer, including burgers, chicken sandwiches, fish and chips, meat pies and curry dishes.

Note that if you purchase food and drink outside before matches, you’ll have to consume them before going inside — you won’t be allowed to take them through the entrance gates.

There are plenty of concession stands inside the stadium as well — in our experience, more than many of its contemporaries around English football, especially if they’re older. However, you won’t find much variety compared to what’s outside, as it’s a similar assortment of burgers, meat pies, etc.

Alcohol is on sale at stadium concession stands but, as is customary around stadiums in England, fans must consume them on the concourses and cannot bring them into the seating bowl.
